Sense of Proportion
The children used charcoal to create a still life picture. They had to show an awareness of proportion and think about the relative size and shape of the objects they drew.
- They created a ‘base’ of charcoal on the page by crushing some charcoal inside a paper towel and smoothing the dust over the paper using the towel or some tissue.
- They looked carefully at the objects. Looking for big shapes and noticing where there are light tones.
- They chose one large object to draw first. Then they used a rubber to draw in the light areas.
- They considered the other objects’ size in relation to the first one they had drawn. They then used a rubber to draw their light tones.
- They looked for dark areas on the objects and used the charcoal to draw these in.
- They smudged marks together to blend areas of light and dark.
